The Video Assistant Referees (VAR), will be deployed in the UEFA Champions League from the 2019/2020 season, according to Europe’s football governing body UEFA.
The system, which was widely used for the first time in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, will also be applied in the 2019 Super Cup and Euro 2020.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin further revealed plans to apply the system from as early as the Championship play off places and also the UEFA Europa league.
It has also been introduced in Spain’s La Liga and Ligue 1 in France this season, with those leagues following on from the German Bundesliga and Serie A in Italy, although the English Premier League has also been more cautious.
UEFA’s biggest concern is how they can effectively run the system in a competition that spans an entire continent.
